Meguri no Gosai — Five-Element Wa Manju

This project seeks to offer an experience of “Wa — Resonance among All Things” through Meguri no Gosai: Five-Element Wa Manju, inviting participants to encounter this philosophy through all five senses.

All things in nature influence one another, move through cycles, and resonate with one another, together weaving a greater harmony.

The ancient Chinese philosophy of the Five Elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, which speaks of the cycles and interconnectedness of nature, is expressed here through five distinct colors and flavors, each embodied in one of the five manju.

With each bite, we invite you to contemplate the workings of nature and, at the same time, to turn your awareness quietly inward—to the subtle resonance between your own mind and body.

In this way, we hope that you may step away, if only for a moment, from the bustle of everyday life and return to the harmony within—the spirit of Wa.

The Beauty of Imperfection

Okakura Tenshin understood the spirit of the tea ceremony as a way of appreciating the imperfect and discovering beauty within it.

Meguri no Gosai: Five-Element Wa Manju likewise does not seek perfection through absolute uniformity. Instead, it embraces the individuality of five different colors, fragrances, and flavors, together with the subtle variations—the natural “fluctuations”—inherent in nature itself, allowing them to form a greater harmony.

The five manju are not meant to be complete or self-sufficient on their own. It is precisely because they are different that they can resonate with, complement, and enrich one another.

Through experiencing these five forms together, we hope you may quietly sense a deeper truth of the cycles and harmony of all things:

It is precisely because we are incomplete that we are able to resonate with and complement one another.

This, perhaps, is one essence of Wa.

We warmly invite you to enjoy Meguri no Gosai: Five-Element Wa Manju and, through all five senses, experience a moment of resonance with nature.

We sincerely look forward to welcoming you.

When I was a child, my grandmother would make simple tsubu-an manju—steamed buns filled with sweet red bean paste. Their humble yet unforgettable taste has remained quietly in the depths of my heart to this day.

It was from this small longing—to recreate that nostalgic flavor with my own hands—that I began making manju.

For this occasion, I have created Meguri no Gosai: Five-Element Wa Manju, inspired by the wish to share, with as many people as possible, even a little of that cherished taste I remember from childhood.

In today’s increasingly competitive society, I sometimes wonder whether we have gradually, and perhaps without realizing it, lost sight of our harmony with nature—the spirit of Wa.

With this in mind, I have brought together the familiar taste of traditional manju with the ancient Chinese philosophy of the Five Elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—which expresses the natural cycles and harmony of the world.

Each of the five manju has been made with care and carries its own color and flavor, representing the blessings of nature, the changing seasons, and the resonance that arises between people.

A new “Wa” within a taste that brings back cherished memories.

As you savor the five manju, I hope you may also take a quiet moment to reflect upon your own memories, sensations, and personal connections with nature and with one another.

It would be my greatest pleasure to welcome you all and to share this small journey of taste, memory, and harmony with you.
